Can we just take a minute to appreciate what an amazing person Rapunzel’s father is? We see him for just a few short sections without him talking at all and can already tell what an amazing person he is. Look at the first gif. You can FEEL how heartbroken he is because he thinks that his wife is going to die. You can see in his face how much he loves her with his whole heart and you can see that if he could somehow take her place instead, he would. He holds his wife’s hand tighter and doesn’t want her to lose that grip. He wants her here with him and he will do anything for that to happen. In the second gif you can see that he is just hoping that this magic flower will work. You can tell he’s still very concerned for his wife. His head is on the back of her head and he slowly lifts her head up and you can tell that in his mind he is thinking “Please let this work. Please. I can’t lose you. I need you,” and maybe he is thinking, “You are my dream” just like Rapunzel was Eugene’s dream. You can just tell that he is a wonderful, loving, sweet, honest man.

you know what’s really amazing about this movie is that Rapunzel’s parents don’t actually have a speaking part at all, but from reflecting on the movie the first time we saw it both me and my boyfriend could have sworn we heard them speak just a few lines. in this scene in particular:

you can see him saying how much he misses his daughter without him speaking a single word. that is amazingly expressive animation.

Rapunzel’s father seems so tired in that scene just before they send the first lantern up into the air.  His hair is gray and his face is wrinkled and his broad shoulders are slumped.  They have been doing this for 18 years, but the heartbreak just doesn’t go away.  And he’s the king.  He needs to be strong for his people.  He still has a kingdom to run.  But here, in the privacy of his home, with his wife, we see what is truly happening.  The lanterns are a painful reminder that his daughter is gone and that just tears him apart.

But Rapunzel’s mother, his wife, the queen… just by cradling his face in her hands and brushing away that single tear, she gives him so much comfort.

This entire scene makes me wonder if they ever tried to have children again.  Perhaps they did, but the queen had such a difficult birth the first time… maybe later attempts to have a child were for naught.  Or perhaps they didn’t…. maybe they just wanted their daughter back.  Regardless, they didn’t (or couldn’t) have children, so they only had the harsh sting of losing what was theirs and the aching hopelessness of never seeing their daughter ever again.

How fitting Rapunzel’s song is for them.

having this really dumb headcanon about Fran being a really slow-runner and Bel just getting frustrated and just picks him and dashes off ( ´//∀//`)
